Jim Corbett and Rudyard Kipling many time immortalized their stories by the mention of huge dark shadows of a great fighter in the deep waters of the mighty rivers of the Indian subcontinent. Not known in those times to the western world they were actually mentioning about ten Mahseer found only in India. It is mainly a fresh water fish that inhabit big rivers of India throughout. The Mahseer is the toughest of all the fresh water fishes that can weigh more than 100 pounds at times. This sounds exciting for sure to the anglers but at present times the sport of fishing and angling in India is combined with conservation due to the existing Indian protection laws for fishing. Apart from that there are also options for trout fishing in the rivers and the ice fed streams. The fast flowing clear streams and the high altitude lakes of the upper Himalayas provides excellent sites for trout fishing. Compared to the west angling in India is a whole new meaning. India’s 3000 kms long coastline and the coastal cities like Mumbai, Kochi, Chennai, Kolkatta and many others offer ample opportunities for angling in the blue waters of India. Apart from the above-mentioned places the major seats for sea fishing are Goa, the coast of Kerala, the Islands of Lakshadweep and Andaman and Orissa. The Lakshadweep Islands are some of the most picturesque locations and rich spots for angling offering a wide variety of catches including sharks, barracuda, blue marlin, kulvel and the groupers. Coming to the fresh water angling India has almost 50000 kms of rivers, streams and lakes satisfies the desire of a keen angler. Major rivers like the Ganga and its numerous tributaries, the Yamuna, the Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Krishna, Kaveri are home to a wide spectrum of fresh water fishes including the mahseer, rohu, katli and the trout. Apart from that there steams in the upper ranges of the Himalayas also acts good destination for angling with scenic beauty.
