Calangute is the queen of all beaches . Originally , it was called as ‘Koli-gutti’ or the land of fishermen. Sometimes it is also known as Kalyangutti or Konvallo-ghott which means village of art or the strong pit of coconut tree. Calangute was the name given by the Portuguese. The landscape of the Calangute beach is semi-circle of greenery which borders the crystal blues waters of the Arabian Sea. The villages of Arpora-Nagoa, Saligao and Candolim do their bit to enhance the divine beauty of Calangute. The view of the beach is serene and picturesque. The place is blessed with coconut trees. It was the hippies who discovered the pristine surroundings and blissful serenity and golden sands in the late 60’s. Today it is number one beach which is frequented by the international tourists from Europe and Calangute became a traveler’s cliché Beauty of Calangute Beach Calangute beach is a tourist haven . One can see the young and old lazing and soaking in the serenity of the sea , sun and sand. This beach has shacks and stalls under the shade of palm trees selling everything from fried prawns and beer to trinkets made of seashells. Places Of Interest Calangute beach lie on the shores of the Arabian Sea of North Goa and is just 15 km from Panajim, the capital of the state of Goa. Some of the places of interest in Calangute are the Church of St Alex and Kekar Art Complex. The Church of St Alex has two towers and a magnificent dome gracing the façade. The inside of the church is a display of the line and beauty of its architectural style and ornate altars. In 1996, Calangute celebrated the fourth centenary of its parish church. The Kerkar Art Complex is a popular center for exhibitions of arts and crafts of local artistes. On Thursdays and Fridays, connoisseurs of Indian classical music and dance can be an audience to various concerts. Calangute beach also offers parasailing, water skiing and wind surfing which starts in the afternoon when the wind is blowing in the right direction and it goes on till sunset.
