Mardi Gras Carnival Goa

Goa is a fantastic land of scenic beauty and amusement. Rarely do we find flaws in the Goan tradition. One such tradition as well as a social gathering that has been a part of Goa is the Mardi Gras Carnival, Goa. This festival originated in Goa during the rein of the legendry King Momo. Even today, this festival is celebrated in Goa just before the Lent season. The Lent season is when the Catholics fast and is a little similar to the Ramzan that the Muslims follow. This may be the festival of the Christians, but the The festival of Mardi Gras Carnival, Goa starts off on what is called the Sabado Gordo in other words the ‘Fat Saturday’ and finally gets over on the Shrove Tuesday or the ‘Fat Tuesday’. The Ash Wednesday is also considered to be the first day of the Lent season. For the localities, the Carnival is one of its own, but for people over the world, the Mardi Gras Carnival, Goa is more like an attraction.

The festival on a whole:

Earlier the Mardi Gras Carnival, Goa was not celebrated on a large scale. But now, keeping the tourism factor in mind, the Goa government has increased the number of events and also, this event is now one of the prime three day festivals celebrated in Goa by the Christians mainly. The Hindu’s are a part of this celebrations whole heartedly. The number of floats and the decorations are worth taking a look at. This is the time when mainly the Liquor stalls and the food malls see a storm of people. The majority in Goa is the Christian population, who still follow the age old customs like fasting for the lent season and breaking the fast with some celebrations like storming friends and families’ house where one is treated with a feast of goodies and drinks. Some of the age old families still follow these customs religiously. Signing and dancing remain the main attraction of these events at the carnival.
