In olden days Goa was known as Gomantakesha. Another theory about Goa's name concerns
Lord Krishna, who came to this land and met the gopikas or cowherd girls and,
fascinated, named it after them and their cows. 'Govapuri' was this name, which
also shortens to 'Goa. The history of the earliest known temples in Goa date back
to over a thousand years. Commercialization has not yet overtaken the sanctity
of the temples in Goa, as in some other parts of India. The temples have been
well maintained and deserve to be visited. The temples of Goa date back to over

been touched by commercialization.
Beauty of Temples of Goa
Some of the pilgrimage and holy places in Goa include the Noroa River, the
Arvalem Waterfall, and the Brahma Camandolu or Water Pot of Brahma - the creator,
in the old Goa Hills. One more sacred place is Sidhanath Mountain in Borim Village.
Amongst the myriad temples found here, there is a vast representation of the
gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon. The architecture of Goan temples is
a little dissimilar mostly because of historical reasons. The primary design
of any Hindu temple is organized around the central shrine that houses the main
deity. A tower or "Shikara" arises from the main shrine and is traditionally
shaped like a pyramid. There are usually two or more smaller shrines housing
other deities also
Something About Temples of Goa
One of the principal temples in goa is the Brahma Temple in the village of
Brahma Carambolim. Dating from 5 AD, it is one of the few temples dedicated
to Brahma to be found anywhere. Some of the famous temples that are worth visiting
are the Sri Mangesh , Sri Bagwati, Sri Ananta Temple , Devaki-Krishna temple
a fine piece of architecture that displays the eternal love of the mother. The
temple of Gopal- Ganapathi is a modern temple architecture built in 1966. It
is actually built in the spot where Portuguese army was defeated by the Maratha
king Sambhaji. Most of the temples were destroyed by the Portuguese during the
period of "Inquisition".
