Location: Pahalgam Hill Station, India is arguably the most popular hill resort in the Kashmir valley. It is situated at the junction of the Aru and Sheshnag rivers. It is in the Anantnag district about 96-km from Srinagar. It is surrounded by fir covered mountains having snow-capped peaks. Pahalgam is also called the Valley of Shepherds. How to reach: From the Bijbehara village on the National Highway NH1A the road to Pahalgam can be taken. Many types of transport like buses and taxis run on this highway. About 10 to 12 hours are essential to cross this mountainous terrain. Bus facility starts from Srinagar and Anantnag. Taxis are available from Srinagar at pre-fixed rates. The nearest airport for Pahalgam is in Badgam district. This airport is connected with the major cities of India. If railway is the preferred mode of transport, then Jammu is the nearest station. It is from here that NH1A connects the Kashmir valley with India. After one reaches in Pahalgam Hill Station, India there is a number of Hotels and Lodges of different types, which are working only in the summer. Places of Interest: Martland is a lofty plateau that contains the antiquated temple of Martanda stand. It overlooks the modern village of Matan. Mattan is a crucial Hindu pilgrimage venue. It has fish filled springs. On a plateau above Mattan and 3-km to the south there is a huge ruined temple of Martland. This is the most imposing ancient ruin in Kashmir. The ruins consist of a portico having a small detached shrine on both the sides and a quadrangular courtyard. 84 columns surrounded this. Overa wildlife sanctuary has a number of rare and protected species of birds and animals. Pahalgam is reputed to be one of Kashmir's most popular trout fishing places. But fishing licenses are difficult to get and very exorbitant. Maximum 6 fishes can be caught in a day. Baisaran is a huge meadow surrounded by thick forests of pine. Hajan is an exact spot for a picnic and has been a locale for many movie scenes. Pahalgam has a 9-hole golf course. Golf sets can be hired from the Tourist Office. Shopping: Pahalgam Hill Station, India is originally a shepherd's village. So, obviously it is known for products made of wool. At the local shops, Gabbas and Namdas can be bought.
