When the statues are smeared with sandalwood paste, it gives an impression of a Sivalinga. Originally the statue is shaped in the tribhanga posture with depicts a lion head lying on a human torso along with two hands.

The word Simhachalam stands for Simha or simham, which means Lion, and Chalam stands for hill. It is believed Simhachalam temple lies on the Western front unlike a normal eastern facing entrance that symbolizes for prosperity. The west-facing temple is denoted with the term victory.
