Buddha's is credited with bringing enlightenment to the many with his sublime teachings and his theory of the eight fold path.

Buddha was of the belief that the all of human beings could be delivered from suffering and misery by following the simple Eight-Fold Path of Salvation. The Eightfold path of Salvation entailed the following principles like the right type of life-view, right intentions right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right frame of mind and of concentration. Buddha was dismissive of all kinds of yajnas and animal sacrifices and rituals and propagated the idea of compassion to all living beings. His teachings also helped correct the various social evils that had crept into the religious system.

Buddha left his earthly abode after Sahasra Chandra Darshana i.e., 1000 full moon days after his birth on the full moon day of Vaishaakha - the day of his birth. Thus the day of birth was also the day of his Enlightenment.
