The Salarjung Museum that is located on the southern bank of the Musi River boasts of the prized displays that belong to the different civilizations dating back to the 1 st century. The museum was a noble attempt of Nawab Mir Yosuouf Ali Khan Salar Jung III, former Prime Minister of the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, who wished to take the priceless collection on a much larger platform. The collections that were left behind in his ancestral palace though initially were exhibited in a private museum was shifted in 1968 to the present location. The Salarjung Museum is now administered by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh along with a Board of Trustees.
The semicircular building with houses in total 38 galleries that are spread over two floors features only a small part of e original collections. The ground floor has 20 galleries and the first floor houses 18 galleries that exhibits different subject. See the se the Indian art, Middle Eastern art, Far Eastern art and the European art. Experience the beauty of the stone sculptures, bronze images, metal –ware, ivory carvings, carpets, lacqurerware, and enamel- collections.

What to see?
- Gallery 1- see the personal artifacts and the mementoes received by the Salar Jungs and the Nizams.
- Gallery 3 and 3A- this gallery exhibits the various Indian textiles, Indian stone and bronze statutes, brass idols of the various dynasties from the South and Indian paintings.
- Gallery 4 and 5- it contains the minor works of the South India that includes the beautiful wooden carvings.
- Gallery 6- the gallery houses a fine collection of the printed and the embroidered fabrics
- Gallery 9, 10 and 11- see the amazing collections of the toys and puppets.
- Gallery 12- it is a shallow porch with stags and deer that are housed in different glass cabinets.
- Gallery 14- it contains various ivory works including the ivory chair that was presented to Tipu Sultan by Louis XV of France.
- Gallery 15 and 16- it features a number of European artifacts.
- Gallery 16A- it includes all the arms of Aurangzeb, Mohammed Shah and Tipu Sultan.
- Gallery 20- It contains various European paintings.
- Gallery 21- to 24- see the beautiful European furniture, potteries and the glass wares.
- Gallery 28- generally termed as the cock room, the gallery houses more than 300 clocks.
- Gallery 29- it houses all the ancient manuscripts in Arabic, Urdu and Persian languages.
- Gallery 31 to 36 – it houses the porcelains from the Far East.
- Gallery 32- it houses a number of Kashmir art works.
Timings
You can visit the mesmerizing Salarjung Museum any time between 10 am to 5pm. the museum is open on all days of the week excepting Fridays. The museum also remains closed on al public holidays.
Admission
You can visit the museum only after you purchase a ticket of 1.50 rupees. Student with identity cards, army personnel in uniform, organized Kisan parties and children below 12 years are given 50% concession on the entry charges.
