Abhaneri which is the most popular ancient village of Rajasthan is also famous for its wonderful step wells or 'baoris' and the most popular Harshat Mata Temple. There is a legend which is attached to the abhaneri village. According to this legend, the village is so called because it is believed that Goddess Harshat Mata used to spread joy and brightness or "abha" all around the ancient village. The original name of the ancient village was Abha Nagri, but in the later coming years the village changed its name to Abhaneri. Abhaneri is believed to have been established by the most popular legendary king Raja Chand. So, it also said that the village could be more than three thousand years old.
The ancient village, Abhaneri is also popular for Harshat Mata temple .The temple is said to belong to tenth century AD. Moreover the temple is protected by the Archeological Department of the Government of India. People worship the goddess daily with full devotion. Moreover, visitors from nearby village love to visit this temple to offer their sincere devotion. The temple although lies in ruins and pieces yet the sculpture of the temple signifies splendid craftsmanship. An annual fair is also organized in honor of Harshat Mata which continues for three days. Large number of visitors participates in this fair annually.
