Gaitor

Gaitor is located opposite to the Man Sagar Lake. This venue lies in a narrow valley which is covered with marble and sandstone chhattris of the legendary rulers of Jaipur. You can find many amazing chhattris scattered all around the venue. This was the area where the famous Kachhwaha monarchs ended their stay on earth. It was the cremation ground for the members of the royal families. The venue has the cenotaphs of all the rulers of Jaipur except Sawai Ishwari Singh. He was cremated outside the extremely popular Jai Niwas garden. The cenotaph of Maharajah Jai Singh II is the most striking one which is ornamented with carved peacocks and with white marble

After the transfer of the capital to Jaipur the legendary king Sawai Jai Singh decided to make Gaitor the cremation ground for the royal family of the area. Then from the year 1733 the cremation of every Kachhwaha king were held here. These chhatris are basically open domed pavilions which are set on a raised platform.

Each chhatri or cenotaph in Gaitor has a total unique design and style. The cenotaph signifies the style of the king to whom it commemorates. The most remarkable one is that of the cenotaph of Jai Singh II which is well decorated with intricate carvings and white marble. This beautiful cenotaph was constructed by Ishwari Singh. It is a dome which is built with white marble. It has 20 carved pillars. The other attraction is the two storied structure with a smaller pavilion on the roof which is the Chhatri of Madho Singh I. He was the second son of Jai Singh II. The visitors can also find the Chhatri of Pratap Singh which is built using marble .the beautiful and remarkable Chhatri of Madho SinghII is built using white and pink stone. The extremely popular miniature shrine of the two sons of Madho Singh II from his mistresses is also another attraction.
