Mullaperiyar Dam of Thekkady was built by the British in 1895. It stands on the Periyar River which originates from Thekkady. The dam was mainly built to irrigate the paddy fields of Tamil Nadu which are perennially drought-prone. Although the dam is in Thekkady, Kerala, most of the water is released to Tamil Nadu. 15 kms from Thekkady is located the Mangala Devi Temple. This ancient shrine is concealed within the dense woods at the summit of a peak, at a height of 1337 m. built in the style of temple architecture with sloping roofs and a central space, this place is accessible to visitors only on the day of the Chithra Pournami festival.
Located near Thekkady is a sleepy little village called Chellarkovil. It gives the visitor breathtaking views of the plains and cascading waterfalls. The village slopes down to the famed coconut groves of Kambam in Tamil Nadu. A place for adventure tourism in Thekkady is Kuttikanam. It is a languid and serene escapade from the metropolis, being washed in the fragrance of cardamom and cradled by the verdant green hills. For an ayurvedic session, head to the Sahyadri Ayurvedic Centre known for its creative and rejuvenating treatment.
