The establishment of Calcutta Ladies Golf Club, Kolkata is solely credited to a group of women led by Mrs. Peddier who could no longer take the humiliation of not being allowed to play at will at the Royal and Tollygunge clubs and hence opened this excusive golf club in 1891.
To set up the golf course, the ladies approached the local authorities, to take permission to lay a nine hole course on the maidan. Though the permission for the same was granted, it was subject to the condition that no permanent structure be built on the area. It was to overcome this clause, that the ingenuous ladies constructed a club house on wheels which can be moved if the army authorities at Fort William so desire. The nine-hole par 68 course now has a hundred members.
So while you list the monumental architecture of the General Post Office, the Corinthian facade of Writers' Building, the Victoria Memorial, the British Taj Mahal, built in memory of Queen Victoria and other landmarks on your itinerary, do not forget to see the Calcutta Ladies Golf Club, Kolkata. It is a must see for any golf enthusiast!
