The game is basically played between two players and it tests the power of framing strategies against each other. The modern day chess evolved from the regions of Southern Europe during the second half of the 15th century. The game though holds its origin in the much older version of the game of the Asian origin.
The popularity of the game has escalated in the international scenario and the stage is also set in Kolkata. The city provides excellent infrastructure for the sport and organizes different National and International tournaments. The game has seen champions like Dibyendu Barua playing from Kolkata and it has also witnessed the emergence of the one of the youngest Grandmaster of the country Srya Sekhar Ganguly from the city as well. These champions are the face of Chess in the country. Today International tournaments like Goodricke Chess Tournaments are a regular feature of the annual Chess calendar which draws many International stars to the city. recently the city hosted the prestigious Kolkata Open which saw 21 Grandmasters, three of them in the Super GM category, 23 International Masters and four women GMs competing for the top honors.
