Rowing has always been a favored sport of Kolkata. Turning the pages of history will take you to the year 1858 when Rowing was officially being established as a sport in the city. The pride capital city of the British period, Kolkata bestows superb facilities for the sport. The city is blessed with some great water bodies which makes up for a great Rowing experience in the city. There are many clubs and organizations which take care of the Rowing in Kolkata. The sport has gained a bit of popularity but mostly is practiced as a recreational sport.

The city is one of the hubs of Rowing in the country with the oldest Rowing club, the Kolkata (Calcutta) Rowing Club. The sport is brilliantly promoted throughout by the club with its 150 years and more of history to fall back. The club was founded in the year 1858 in order to promote Rowing on the river Ganges. The present day Kolkata Rowing club is placed at the Rabindra Sarobar lake, an artificial lake built in the southern part of the city. The club offers Rowing facilities daily from 6 am to 7:30 am and 3:30 pm to 5 pm. The sport is also played at the competitive level and the club offers better facilities for different competitions. One can enjoy regular induction and practice sessions at the club and a unique “learn to row” courses.

The city plays host to some of the prestigious Rowing championships of the National and state level. One of them is the annual regatta of the Amateur Rowing Association of the East (ARAE). This is one of the oldest Rowing championships of the country.
