According to the popular myth, King Hiranyakashyap wanted to be the most powerful person on earth and wanted to be worshipped as the god. King Hiranyakashyap’s son Prahlad, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, refused to obey him. Hiranyakashyap in order to punish his son and asked for help from Holika, his sister. As Holika was totally immuned to fire, the King Hiranyakashyap asked Holika to sit at in the midst of a flaming pyre with Prahlad on her lap. Prahlad emerged unhurt by the fire while Holika was burnt to ashes. In this way, the good over the evil, prevailed. This led to the celebration of the festival of Holi or the Dol Purnima. The celebration of the festival of colors also known as Holi marks the triumph of the good over the evil.
