Overview of the Dol Purnima , Kolkata- The Dol Purnima Festival of Kolkata is observed every year to mark the arrival of spring season. Now-a-days, harmless herbal colors manufactured from flower extracts are also used instead of harmful chemical powders. An integral part of the entire merry making surrounding the Dol Purnima in Kolkata includes drinking mild milk beverage laced with marijuana called bhang. Merrymakers just love having this intoxicating drink called bhang. All this adds to the fun quotient of the festival of colors making it all the more lovable. It may be mentioned here, that in Mathura, the birth place of Lord Krishna, Dol Purnima is observed with special rituals and the traditional customs of worshipping Lord Krishna.

Myths attached with the Dol Purnima , Kolkata-

According to the popular myth, King Hiranyakashyap wanted to be the most powerful person on earth and wanted to be worshipped as the god. King Hiranyakashyap’s son Prahlad, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu, refused to obey him. Hiranyakashyap in order to punish his son and asked for help from Holika, his sister. As Holika was totally immuned to fire, the King Hiranyakashyap asked Holika to sit at in the midst of a flaming pyre with Prahlad on her lap. Prahlad emerged unhurt by the fire while Holika was burnt to ashes. In this way, the good over the evil, prevailed. This led to the celebration of the festival of Holi or the Dol Purnima. The celebration of the festival of colors also known as Holi marks the triumph of the good over the evil.
