The Kolkata Metro Service is the underground railway network in Kolkata, the first underground built in India. Due to the growing problem of transport congestion in Kolkata, the late Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. B.C. Roy, had conceived the idea of building an Underground Railway for Kolkata way back in 1949. However, something could be done only when the foundation stone of the Kolkata Metro Service project was laid by Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, on December 29, 1972 and the construction work started in 1973. The Kolkata Metro Service, India's first and Asia's fifth underground railway network became a reality on October 24, 1984.
The Kolkata Metro Service connects the different parts of the city, beginning from Dum Dum in the north and continuing south through Park Street and Esplanade, till it reaches Tollygunge in the southern end. The stations of the Kolkata Metro Service on the North South Corridor are – Tollygunge, Rabindra Sarobar, Kaligahat, Jatin Das Park, Netaji Bhavan, Rabindra Sadan, Maidan, Park Street, Esplanade, Chandni Chowk, Central, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Girish Park, Shova Bazar, Shyam Bazar, Belgachia, and Dum Dum.
The Kolkata Metro Service is being extended, with a new route being constructed to Garia in the south. It is expected to be completed in 2007. The stations to be part of this line of the Kolkata Metro Service are – Tollygunge, Kudghat, Bansdroni, Naktala, Garia Bazaar, Pranabnagar, and New Garia.
