The ports in Kolkata are one of the most sophisticated ports in the country which provides huge storage facilities making the Cargo trade easier. The Kolkata port also delivers a state of the art infrastructure with modern computerized container terminal.
Kolkata port is part of the British legacy of the city. It was established by the British East India Company which started trading in India after receiving the trading rights from the Mughals. A port commission was set up for further development of the port after the powers shifted hands in 1870.
Presently the ports of Kolkata are used mostly for cargos with few passenger ship services. Among the two domain systems the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) constitutes of the Kidderpore Dock (KPD), and Netaji Subhas Dock (NSD), in Kolkata, Petroleum Wharves at Budge Budge along with two Anchorages at Saugor, Diamond Harbour and Sandheads
The other Dock system lies in Haldia which renders mainly cargo services.
