History of Kolkata Trams Service (Calcutta Tramways Company)-Responsible for managing tramways in Kolkata, Kolkata Trams Service (Calcutta Tramways Company) started the first horse driven tram carriage service in the year 1873 between Sealdah and Armenian Ghat Street. Due to lack of decent patronization the Kolkata Trams Service (Calcutta Tramways Company) was put on hold. In the year 1880, the British started The Calcutta Tramways Company Limited as a registered joint stock company at London. The concept of electricfication of Tram Service also came into vogue in the late 1990s.
The Govt. of West Bengal entered into an agreement with the Kolkata Trams Service (Calcutta Tramways Company) in the year 1951.Subsequestly the Calcutta Tramways Act, 1951 was enacted which led to transfer of all rights with regards to the Tramways in the hands of the Govt. of West Bengal. In the year 1967 the Govt of West Bengal passed the Calcutta Tramways Company (Taking Over of Management ) Act, 1967 and assumed the management on 19th July 1967. The Calcutta Tramways (Acquisition of Undertaking) Ordinance, 1976 was proclaimed on November 8th, 1976. Kolkata Trams Service (Calcutta Tramways Company) has now become a Public Sector Undertaking. It may be mentioned here that in the year 1992, Kolkata Trams Service (Calcutta Tramways Company) has embarked on a new venture by introducing Bus services in and around Kolkata.
