It is told that the place has got its name from the Persian word 'damdama' meaning a raised platform or ground. This was the area where the headquarters of British artillery in the 19th century was placed.
There are a number of jute milling, tannery, iron and steel rolling, glass, match and soap factories. The region has abundant number of hospitals, schools and other health care units also.

Being one of the terminal stations, the primary transport is metro. The region also has a local railway station. It is one of the important railway junctions in the city. Dum Dum Airport:
The civil airport was originally known as Dum Dum Airport & it was renamed as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in the honor of the Bengali Indian patriot Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
It is located approximately 17 km from the city centre. The airport was one of the busiest in Asia once. Today it is a small airport providing domestic as well as a few international connections. The airport has three terminals: a domestic terminal (opened in the early 1990s), an international terminal (the oldest terminal) and a cargo terminal.
