The Library of the Asiatic Society is the crowning glory of the Asiatic Society, Kolkata, imparting the society much of its honor and repute as a grand source of knowledge among the literary society of Kolkata. Its importance lies not in numerical strength but in its rich and unique contents. Most of the collection has been built up with books and manuscripts received as gifts from the members, starting with Henri Richardson who on 25 March 1784, gifted seven Persian manuscripts to the Society.

The collection has been grouped into three departments:
(1) Printed Books and Periodicals
(2) Manuscripts and Archives and
(3) Museum ObjectsThe Printed Books Department has four sections, viz;
  -  European Languages
  -  Sanskritic & other Modern Indian Languages
  -  Perso-Arabic and Urdu and
  -  Sino-Tibetan and South-Asian Languages

The Museum of The Asiatic Society is a major storehouse of information on the rich past of the land as displayed by its large collection of Paintings, Manuscripts, Sculptures, Bronzes, Coins and Inscriptions.

The Asiatic Society, Kolkata announced its intention of establishing a Museum as early as 1796, though it took some time to finally materialize in the beginning of 1814 under the superintendence of Dr. N. Wallich. The rapid development of the Museum is more than evident from the first catalogue, published in 1849 and other descriptive catalogues of different sections.
