Saheed Minar, Kolkata located near Esplanade at Kolkata Maidan in India, was popularly known as the Octerloney Monument. The magnificent Saheed Minar was built in 1848 by Sir David Octerloney to commemorate his victory in the Nepal War (1814-1816).It was in 1969 that the Octerloney Monument got the name 'Saheed Minar'. It was renamed in the honor of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of India’s freedom.

The construction of Kolkata Saheed Minar owns an architectural blend. Its foundation is based on the Egyptian style, whereas the main Saheed Minar in Kolkata and its dome is based on Syrian and Turkish designs respectively. Presently it happens to be one of the Heritage Structure of Kolkata and naturally becomes a place of interest.

Presently, the political parties convene meetings over here. Various rallies and seminars also take place beside the Saheed Minar, Kolkata. The tradition of holding political meetings began in 1931, when Rabindranath Tagore presided over a convocation meeting held over there.

From the apex of the Saheed Minar a good view of the hub city can be obtained but permission to ascend the Monument has to be taken from the Kolkata Police Headquarters at Lal Bazaar.

Location: Near Esplanade,in Kolkata Maidan in Kolkata, India.

Best time to visit: October to April, in evening to enjoy the illumination.

Transport: You can take a taxi from any part of Kolkata to reach out there, or you can avail bus service also to reach Esplanade. You can also try the underground railway or Metro Railway to arrive at the Esplanade Metro Station.

Monument Detail: Height-165 feet.
Position: At the Northern end of Maidan.

To catch the splendid sight of glittering Kolkata you have to reach there in evening, taking a glimpse of the City of Joy from such a height will certainly be an unforgettable memory for everyone.
