India has numerous vast natural reserves from the north to south, east to west. Many of these natural areas are protected nationally and internationally because of its unique flora and fauna. Eastern India's state of West Bengal has one such natural reserve popularly known as the Sunderban Tiger Reserve, Kolkata. As the name suggests it is a reserve for the famous and exotic Royal Bengal Tiger. The Reserve is located at the south of West-Bengal in the Sunderbans area. The Sunderbans which are named after the abundance of Sundari trees are part of a vast saltwater swamp and forest formed by the rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna. In fact the Sunderbans form the world's largest delta spreading from the Indian state of West-Bengal to its neighboring country of Bangladesh.
The managing of the Indian Sunderbans was transferred to the the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve in 1973 which was established under "Project Tiger”. Out of the 4262 sq.kms of the Sunderbans, the Sunderban Tiger Reserve, Kolkata has an area of 2585 sq.kms out of which 1330sq.kms is the core area. UNESCO's World Heritage Committee has inscribed this unique Sunderban Tiger Reserve in the World Heritage List in 1997 and recognized it as a Global Biosphere Reserve in 2001. According to the last census there are 269 Royal Bengal Tigers in the Reserve.
Apart from having the largest tiger reserve in the world it also has a wide and myriad varieties of wildlife like salt water crocodiles, Gangetic dolphins, chitals (spotted deer), fishing cats, wild boars, Olive Ridley turtles, otters, rhesus macaques, monitor lizards, snakes, innumerable fishes, crabs, lobsters, shrimps and a host of birds including ibises, water fowl, kingfishers, storks, herons, Brahmin ducks, and egrets.
One of the best times to visit the Sunderban Tiger Reserve, Kolkata is from September to March since it is the best time to catch a glimpse of the Royal's. Although during the monsoons the place has its own enchantment. You can reach the Reserve from Kolkata by reaching Canning by train and bus service. From Canning take a motorboat to Sajnekhali, the starting point of the the Sunderban Tiger Reserve, Kolkata. For accommodation there are forest guest houses and lodges at Sajnekhali and surrounding places.
