Belur Math, Kolkata is the international headquarters of the Ramkrishna Order, with the twin organizations of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission based here. Constructed on 14th January 1938, with Swami Vivekananda as the key player behind it, the Belur Math, Kolkata was set-up as homage to the memory of Sri Ramkrishna, his ‘spiritual guru’. Spread over several acres of land on the western banks of the river Hooghly, the Ganges, the Belur Math, Kolkata is a place of pilgrimage for people from all over the world.
The architectural style of the Belur Math, Kolkata is quite unique, and incorporates the various architectural styles of the different religions of India. The edifice of the Belur Math, Kolkata combines the features of a church, a temple and a mosque, to symbolize the spirit of religious fraternity. People belonging to various religions come from all over the world to this wonderful place, and even those come here, who are atheists, but in search of peace and tranquility.
The Belur Math, Kolkata includes within its premises the main monastery, and several temples, including the Ramkrishna Sarada Mandir, the main temple in Belur. The ashes of Sri Ramkrishna were placed at this spot by his favorite disciple Swami Vivekananda. Another attraction for visitors is the Sri Ramkrishna Museum, established with the support of the National Council of Science Museum. Items owned by Sri Ramkrishna, Ma Sarada and Swami Vivekananda are kept as souvenirs in this museum.
