The Magen David Synagogue, Kolkata, standing on Canning Street, is one of the oldest pilgrimage destinations in Kolkata. It was founded by Elias David Joseph Ezra in loving memory of his father David Joseph Ezra. These father-son real estate magnates were perhaps the most influential Jewish family in Kolkata, responsible behind the construction of such buildings as the Chowringhee Mansions, Esplanade Mansions and the synagogue Neveh Shalom.
