The actual name of New Market, Kolkata is Sir Stuart Hogg market, however very few people call it by this name. Today, this shopping complex is no less than an institution in itself and is arguably one of Calcutta's best shopping centres. The market was designed by an East Indian Railway Co. architect, and was opened in 1874 & named after the then Commissioner, Sir Stuart Hogg.

Earlier there used to be a garden with a beautiful fountain & benches for tired shoppers. Today, it continues to be a premier shopping district in Kolkata, selling almost everything from linen to cakes, fruits to fishes, rolls to chips and bags to shoes, all available at a reasonable price.
