The Regal Cinema was opened in 1933 and was designed by Charles Stevens with the interiors being designed by Karl Schara. Regal Cinema was the only Art Deco cinema at the time of its opening and it lent its name to Regal Circle.

In the year 1933, the Governor of Bombay inaugurated the Regal Cinema. At that time it was a multi-use building combining a theatre with shops at street level. The décor of the building was designed beautifully keeping in mind the spaces, airiness, coolness, size and simplicity. It was the first of Bombay's Art Deco cinemas.

Regal Cinema was a fully air conditioned cinema complex and has an underground parking lot. There was also a lift that takes you up to the main building from the parking lot. All these were suppose to be great innovations at that time.

The lobby of the theater features a lot of mirror work and the main auditorium had a motif of sunrays in pale orange and jade green.
