to its tourists. Karla caves are the Buddhist caves situated in the hills of Sahyadri
. These caves are sculpted by the Hinayana sect of Buddhism between 2nd and 3rd
BC. The Karla caves are just 11 km from Lonavala and 114 Km from Mumbai and these
are the Buddhists caves which lie in amidst of the Western Ghats. These caves
are accessible via road and rails. One has to board the train to lonavala and
then hire a bicycle or rickshaw to reach the Karla caves. These caves are almost

These beautiful sculpted caves display the historic glory of India during the 2nd BC. Karla caves probably has the largest collection of Chaityas. Chaitya’s are the prayer hall where the Buddhist monks get together for prayers. These caves were sculpted out by the monks who used to come to Lonavala during the monsoon months. Theses caves have carved temple screens, sculpted with railing ornaments and human couples. Outer and inner temple screens form an antechamber to the main cave. The wooden doors and windows are finely decorated with intricate sculptures of couples embracing. There are several prayer halls and several niharas on a hill 150 meters high. The Great Chaitya at Karla is considered to be one of the greatest monuments among all the rock-cut temples in India. The wood work of these caves give an idea what the wooden architecture used to be like 2000 years ago.
