Matheran

Matheran is one of the hill stations in Maharashtra and the nearest get away for the folks of Mumbai . This hill station is situated on a hilltop at an altitude of 800m. Matheran is 171 km from Mumbai. Hugh Mallet discovered it in the year 1850, then the collector of Thane. Lord Elphinstone , the Governor of Mumbai laid foundations for the further development of Matheran as hill station. The railway was opened to the public in the year 1907. The hill railway was built by Sir Adanjee Peerbhoy. The railway is 20km long and has a gauge of two feet with a ruling gradient of 1 in 20. The track zig zags up the side of the hill , displaying the full view of the serene and scenic beauty of the Matheran Hill.

Matheran indeed offers a tourism with difference. No motor vehicles are allowed in the Matheran hilltop. So the air is clean and fresh always. The only means of transport to reach Matheran is trains running between Neral and Matheran . Matheran's cliffs are of incredible heights create stunning points. These include Panorama Point , Monkey Point, and Porcupine point, Louisa Point, Echo Point, Rambagh and Alexander point . The other popular points are hart, Coronation, Chowk and One Tree Hill Points. The Panorama Point and Porcupine Point are popular for sunrise and sunset view respectively.

Matheran has been declared as the eco-sensitve area by the Ministry of Union Environment. This place is a sanitarium of both red-faced and black-faced monkeys. The hills and valleys of Matheran also house the rare and vital herbs and other medicinal plants. The only form of transport within Matheran is horses and hand-pulled rickshaws. Since the hills are in the elevated position , the climate is pleasant during the summer months. The lake Charlotte is the main source of water supply in Matheran. The highest view point of Matheran is Mount Barry . The old British style architecture is preserved in Matheran.
