Panchgani is named after the five hills that surround it . It was founded by Sir John Chason in the year 1854 as a sanatorium town to rest and recuperate away from the heat and dust of the Indian plains. Today, the little town is better known for its English style boarding schools and old Parsi houses that look out on to the forested tracts. Panchgani is a picturesque hill resort, situated at an altitude of 1334 m. Panchgani is just 18km from another popular hill station Mahabaleshwar. The River Krishna meanders through tiny hamlets, farms and ravines, hundreds of meters below. Tourism with a DifferencePanchagni is not commercial like Mahabaleshwar. It is a very quiet hamlet and the holiday pastimes include walking , riding and simply unwinding at home.
