Janmaashatmi, a Hindu festival also called as Krishna Janmaashtmi is celebrated
as the birth of Lord Krishna. Celebrations in Mumbai began at midnight as the
Lord made his godly appearance at midnight. At midnight in Mumbai, idol of infant
Krishna is given a bath, kept in a crib and worshipped. At dawn women draw patterns
of small children’s feet just outside their home, walking towards
their house. The patterns are made up of rice flour paste. The feet represent
infant Krishna’s feet into his house. People in Mumbai fast
on the previous day of Janmaashtami.After worship and morning prayer devotees
break their fast. In the afternoon the traditional custom of “Dahi
Handi� is celebrated in Mumbai.Janmaashtami also known as Dahi
Handi in Mumbai comes in the month of August and is celebrated with great fervor.
Dahi Handi is a clay pot that is filled with butter and curd. The pot is suspended above the ground at a high altitude. Dahi Handi in Mumbai reenacts Krishna’s childhood pranks. Krishna along with his friends used to steal curd and butter from neighboring houses. Various Handis are hung in every corner of Mumbai. Groups of youngsters travel in trucks around the city and try to break Handis as many as possible. These groups are also called Govinda Pathaks. Prizes in the form of lakhs of rupees are offered to those Pathaks that break handis that are hung on a high altitude. Some of the famous Handis are located at Mazgaon, Dadar, and Lalbaug. To reach and break the pot human pyramids of young men are formed. The Team that breaks the pot gets the prize. After the “Dahi-Handi� celebration mid-day feasts are held where extended families come together. Communal togetherness exists during this festival. Janmaashtami is indeed a joyful celebration.
