History:
This Archaeological Survey of India, Mumbai is actually a part of the Asiatic Society of British . The famous archaeologist Sir William Jones founded this society. It was founded on January 15, 1784. In the year 1788 this society began publishing a journal - The Asiatic Researches . The Archaeological Survey of India, Mumbai was founded in 1861. It was done during the British Rule and it was first administered for almost 14 years by Sir Alexander Cunningham along with the help of the then present Viceroy Canning. During this period its excavation area also included Afghanistan. During the administration of Mortimer Wheeler , as the Director-General, in the year 1944. During this time, the head-office of the Survey was situated at the Railway Board building in North at Shimla. After the Indian Independence, this society was considered under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites And Remains Act of 1958 . Archaeological Survey of India, Mumbai works on almost 3636 monuments it has declared to be of national importance which are considered under the provisions of the Antiquity and Art Treasure Act 1972 . Some of the recently excavated by this society are Harshaka-Tila at Thanesar in the state of Haryana in north. It has exposed a complete cultural sequence from the Kushan period to medieval periods.
