The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai is the extreme western point of the Central Railways in India and also the southern most point of the central and harbor lines of Mumbai's rail transport system . The administrative offices of the Central Railways are in this building alone and have taken up most of the area.
Foundation and history:
This magnificent building of (present) Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai is built on the design proposed by F. W. Stevens and took almost 10 years to be completed . It was started to be built in the year 1878 and was completed by 1888 . The name Victoria Terminus was named after the then Queen Empress on Jubilee Day, 1887 . The total expenditure of construction was around Rs. 16.14 lakhs (Rs. 1.614 million) . The railway station was opened to the general public on New Year's Day of 1882. It is now the starting point of the complete Central Railways. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai is built in a unique Victorian Gothic Revival style , which is based on Italian Gothic models . Initially there were not only the railway offices in this building but also the offices for other higher superiors like the superintendent of police. The railway tickets were also printed in the same building initially.
