It is 98 meters tall and is considered to be the oldest functional hydro-electric power stations in Asia. The fall produces electricity for the neighboring Kolar Gold Fields. The visitors at Shivanasamudra can view the waterfalls from the Hydel Power Plant. The less popular Barchukki falls resembles the world renowned Niagara Falls. This fall at Shivanasamudra has a wider cascading edge than its more popular counterpart. Shivanasamudra in the southern state of Karnataka is also a famous Hindu pilgrimage centre. Popularly known as the Madhya Ranga, Shivanasamudra also houses the temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha.
