There are various Festivals and Events in Mysore , Dasara Festival in Mysore is the most important and celebrated event in this little city. Dasara festival is synonymous with Mysore . This festival is a 10 day long celebration, which generally falls in the months of September and October, depending on the favorable days in the Hindu calendar. The celebrations of Dasara Festival in Mysore still draw huge crowds from all across India. Tourists from abroad come to Mysore to see the special programs during the 10-day festival and in particular the last day's Dasara procession led by the Royal family.

The highlight of the Dasara Festival in Mysore is the Dasara procession held on Vijayadashami, the tenth, second to last day. It is led by decorated elephants carrying an idol of goddess Chamundeswari seated in a golden elephant seat. Following the elephants are the decorated horses, folk dancers and enormous bright and colorful floats. The long procession makes its way from the Kings palace to the parade ground. The closing ceremonies of the Dasara Festival in Mysore include cultural functions from different regions of India ending with torch light and brilliant fireworks.

Dasara festival has both mythological and historical importance in the city of Mysore. The festivals origin lies in the great epic of 'Mahabharata'. The victory of good over evil is celebrated during Dasara Festival in Mysore. The festival marks the killing of the demon Mahishasura by the goddess Chamundeswari. The Royal palace of Mysore and city are lit up for ten days and the entire city is dressed up in a festive look. The first nine days of the Dasara Festival is called Navaratri and is celebrated to mark the destruction of evil. The celebrations of Dasara Festival in Mysore can be traced to the Vijayanagar rulers. History says that the rulers of the medieval Vijayanagar Empire celebrated it with pomp and fanfare.
