The National Museum of Natural History in Mysore is an institution which provided non-formal environmental education under the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. The museum has three regional centers at Mysore,Bhopal and Bhubaneshwar. Of the various museums in Mysore , the Regional Museum of Natural History is one of the major attractions. The museum was inaugurated on 20 th May, 1995. The museum is located on the banks of Karanji Lake and the beautiful Chamundi Hills forms its background. The museum exhibits the flora, fauna and geological wealth of South India. The Biological Diversity has multiple sections. The first one exhibits the biodiversity of South India, with special reference to the Western Ghats. The next section deals with tropical rain forest and highlights their diversity and global benefits. The other sections deal with wetlands and mangrove forest, diorama of a marine habitat. In the last section a large exhibit panel cautions against destroying the nature. Life through the Ages is a walk-through tunnel which depicts the evolution of man in an interesting fashion. The Discovery center is an interactive section feature a Discovery Room, a Computer Room, a vivarium and a mini Weather Station. Visitors can handle, examine and study specimens in the discovery room. Variety of toys and puzzles are also present for the smaller children. A mini theater, a sound booth, a bioscience lab allows children to enjoy learning with fun. The bioscience computer room enables the school and college students to learn biology through interactive and multimedia techniques.
