Officially called Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, the Mysore Zoo is one of the cities most popular tourist attractions. It was established in 1892 by the erstwhile ruler of Mysore, Shri Chamarajendra Wadiyar Bahadur and is one of the oldest zoos in the world. It is situated in the heart of the city and covers and area of around 100 acres. It was created in a portion of the Summer Palace situated in the eastern part of Mysore. It is only 3 kms from the city bus stand and is easily reachable. Amidst lush landscape, the Zoo houses rare and exquisite animals and bird species. The Zoo landscape has been embellished by the presence of about 85 species of trees and 35 species of ornamental plants. The blooming fauna provides the perfect environment for the wild captive animals of the zoo. The Zoo has been further extended and it now covers the adjacent Karanji Lake. The Karanji Lake is an ideal place for bird watching. There is also a plan to develop the lake into a bird sanctuary. One can have the best of the place if they can get there before 12' O clock. One can witness Lions, Peacocks, White Tiger, Hippo, Nilgiri Langur, Himalayan Brown Bears, Deers, Parakeet and many more.
