Dedicated to revere the brave martyrdom of the virgin saint Philomena and the grace of the Almighty, the church speaks volume about the secularity of the Indian rulers. But St. Philomena's Church at Mysore is an architectural landmark which the tourists never give a miss! The beautiful citadel located in the north of Mysore city, was built somewhat between the years 1926 and 1933. St. Philomena's Church in Mysore is one of the largest churches of its kind in South Asia. The church has a neatness and simplicity that is characteristic of Gothic style. Earlier it was a miniature replica of Germany's Cologne Cathedral. It was remodeled later on. Situated at the crossing of Hyder Ali and Government house Road, the imposing structure of the church inspires awe and reverence. The church is 150 feet in length and the 150 feet high twin spires tend to kiss the sky. The interior of the soaring building has an immaculate beauty because of its snowy-white walls. Sunrays pervading the church through the stained-glass windows offer a sense of calmness and peace. The glass-windows contain the depiction of the stories of Christ - his Birth, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the Ascension. The relics of the virgin saint Philomena is saved in an unusual underground chamber. Place a candle in front of the altar and bow your head with reverence. Coming out of the church, take a stroll in the small, well-manicured garden in front of the citadel. The church also runs an orphanage in its premises. It is open everyday from 8 in the morning to 6 in the evening. The Holy Mass is held in the morning and evening. Special prayers are held on Sundays and during the festivals.
