Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, India: Introduction: Agra is one of the most scenic places in the world and of the top ranking in India. There are various tourist attractions in Agra that makes it a better place for the tourist to traverse and enjoy the places may it be the forts, monuments or even sanctuaries. One of the best sanctuaries that Agra hosts are the Bharatpur bird sanctuary. The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, India being situated at almost at the distance of 57 kilometers from Agra in India. Bharatpur is also known by the popular name, the Keoladeo Ghana National Park. The name Keoladeo has been given to the place due to the name of an ancient temple, which is situated centrally in the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, India itself. The approach road for this sanctuary is the most easily to find and better to find. It is situated on the Delhi-Jaipur highway. It is one of the best bird sanctuaries in the whole of India. In the year 1760, the Ajan Dam was constructed. It was done with the interest to save the Bharatpur town from the floods. The depression that was caused due to the extraction of the soil was then filled with water and since then it is known as the Bharatpur Lake. Initially it was a preserve for the duck hunting for the interest of the royalty of Bharatpur. This preserve in the year 1982 earned its status as the national park.
This sanctuary covers almost 29 sq. km. of land. Out of the total land coverage, 11 sq. km. is almost marshland while the remaining is forestland. One may find around 300 species of birds in this sanctuary. Most of these birds are water birds and migratory birds, which come here in their respective migration period. The best feature of this sanctuary is that the Siberian cranes migrate and stay here for the whole winter season. Various species of pelicans, cranes, flycatchers, buntings, larks, pipits, wagtails, stints, eagles, hawks geese, shanks, ducks and warblers can also be found in this sanctuary. Though birds are the main feature of the Bharatpur Bird sanctuary, India one can find wild animals like the boar, Chital, Nilgai and Sambar. The best time to visit this sanctuary is between the months of October and January.
