The land of India continues to be a leading example of peaceful co-existence of man and animals. The country continues to surprise a lot of people due to the fact that despite being the second most populated country in the world, it provides home to an array of the most unique floral and animal species. This vast country houses some of the most fragile, varied and unbelievably rich ecosystems in the world. One of the prime examples of this fact is the Sunderbans that covers the largest deltaic regions in the world.

Sunderbans - The Hidden Treasure

The Sunderbans is located in the eastern state of West Bengal and is situated at the huge delta created by two of the biggest rivers in India - the Ganges and the Brahmaputra. This deltaic region is characterized by extensive patch of the richest mangrove forests in the world. The forest is interspersed with small tributaries and streams that divide the forest into a rich archipelago. This archipelago comprises of a total of 54 islands, which are filled with rich alluvial soil and marshes. The name of the forest has been derived from specific specie of trees, known as Sundari. The Sunderbans National Park, India is spread over a huge area of 1330.10 sq.km and has the distinction of being the largest mangrove forest in the world.

The park has an extremely difficult terrain and hence several parts of Sunderbans are even today totally inaccessible for people. This makes Sunderbans National Park, India a great mystery, which can be proven from the fact that the officials have not been even able to make a tiger census in the park. The park is renowned to have the largest population of the Royal Bengal Tiger in the world. Apart from the tiger, the other important wildlife in the Sunderbans includes the fishing cat, the crab eating monkey, the olive ridley turtles and myriad species of birds and aquatic life. Yet another major specie found in the Sunderbans is the large estuarine crocodile. The park has the world's largest breeding centers of the estuarine crocodiles. The highlight of the Sunderbans is the mode of travel that needs to be used by the visitors. The only way of traversing through the Sunderbans is by motorboats that are used for traveling through the intricate maze of waterways.

The Sunderbans National Park, India attracts a large number of wildlife enthusiasts who wish to get a glimpse of some of the most elusive creatures in the world.
