Location: Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary is also known as the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary. It is located in the Little Rann of Kutch in the state of Gujarat in India. It has an area of 4954 sq km and is the biggest wildlife sanctuary in India. It was established in 1972 and came under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1973. How to reach: This wildlife sanctuary can be reached from Ahmedabad in 2.5 hours after covering a distance of 110 kms. From Rajkot, it is 175 kms and takes 3.5 hours to reach. From Bhuj, the distance of 268 kms can be covered in 6 hours. Viramgam is very close to the sanctuary. It is only 45 kms and this distance can be covered in 1 hour. Places of Interest: The total Little Rann of Kutch is a featureless expanse of flat land. It has some islands called the Baits. The Indian Wild Ass represents the horse tribe. These asses are lured by the flat grass covered expanses known as islands, where coarse grasses sprout during monsoon. In summer, these asses move to oily bets where there is recurrent supply of water and grass. The speed and stamina of these wild asses is matchless. The wild ass is a strong animal. The stallion can fight tremendously for capturing a mare in the mating season. During fighting, the contestants rear up on their hind legs and kick viciously. The sanctuary also consists of endangered Ghudkhur that is not found anywhere else in the world. Other fauna like Blue-Bull, Chinkara, Hedgehog, Wolf, Jackal, Fox, Jungle Cats and Desert Cats are also found in large numbers. Nearly 300 species of birds can be seen around the Rann in winter. A myriad of Cranes and Flamingoes can also be watched. Very rarely found birds like Houbara Bustard, Falcons, a gamut of larks are also found. Snakes, Tortoises, Lizards and other reptiles are also found. Traveling on the tremendous expanse of the Rann in an open jeep is a breathtaking experience.
