While taking an excursion nearby Pondicherry, jaunt to the land of Arikamedu which has a great historical importance which dates back to the second century B.C. Arikamedu was previously a trade centre for the Romans and is situated approximately 4 Kms from the south of Pondicherry, lying near to the bank of Ariyankuppam River. The Romans, Cholas and French seem to have greatly influenced the region. Presently, Arikamedu is an archeological site where Mortimer Wheeler accomplished his renowned excavation during 1940s. Once a popular fishing colony, Arikamedu became the base for Romans and Greco-Romans involvement of industrial trade. Apart from the maritime commerce, inland trades were initiated with 'megalithic' sites like Kaveripattinam, Alagankulam, Suttukeni and many others. Wines, Garum sauce and Olive oils were the major products that were imported. Textile, beads, semiprecious gems, glass and shell bangles were exported to this country. Excavation like chola coins, Chinese Celadon pottery and East Asian glassy ceramics prove that the region was once occupied and even had its involvements in the Medieval East-West maritime trade. Arikamedu was deserted after 200 A.D. and was occupied from 300 A.D. to 700 A.D, which can be best explained with the excavation of the Amphoras and of the copper coin of Constantine I. The perpendicular walls and mission house survives till today while the rest of the area are piled with excavated trench. The area is thriving with Coconut and Mango trees, where one may indulge in a river cruise ride conducted by the PT & TDC. Cruise from the New Port in Uppalam to Arikamedu and come across landmarks like lighthouse, the Ariyankuppam River and the Veerampattinam beach. The Pondicherry Museum is must a visit which still retains and displays the ancient pottery, beads, shell bangles ear studs and many other primitive items. Tour to Arikamedu, which is a magnificent destination and learn about the historical importance of the region.
