Introduction

The city of the famous institute, India Institute of Management stands proudly on the banks of the River Sabarmati. It is the seventh largest urban agglomeration in India. It is also the administrative centre of the Ahmedabad district and the capital of Gujarat. It is sometimes also known as Karnava which is a name for an older town that existed in the same location in the historic times where Ahmedabad stands today. As it is the home of textile industry, so it has been nicknamed as, "the Manchester of the East". It has also been the epicenter of many campaign of Civil disobedience. Being the commercial and the political capital of Gujarat, Ahmedabad, India has seen itself growing from a cultural place to a rising center of education to a hub of scientific industries and information technology.

History

Earlier known as Ashapalli or Ashaval the history of Ahmedabad, India traces back to the 11th century when it was inhabited for the first time. Karandev I, the Solanki ruler established a city on the banks of Sabarmati named Karnavati which laid down the foundation of the modern day Ahmedabad city. Gradually this place was ruled by many other rulers subsequently and now it is the city of Ahmedabad which stands today.

Heart of Gujarati Culture

Ahmedabad, India is regarded as the cultural heart of Gujarat. It is the centre of Gujarati cultural activities and carries in its lap the diverse traditions of different ethnic and religious communities. One of the most famous celebrations is the nine night's celebration of Navaratri. People of Ahmedabad enjoy a lot performing the dance of Garba whole night. Amongst the other festivals that are celebrated with great pomp and show are Deepavali, Holi, Eid-ul-Fitr and Christmas. Another major festival is the Rath Yatra. With regards to the eating habits the most famous is a typical Gujarati Thali which comprises of roti, dal, rice and shaak with accompaniments like pickles and roasted papads. There are many restaurants that provide different cuisines. It also holds the credit of having an all vegetarian Pizza Hut first in the world.

Educational Elegance

It is also a city with many prestigious educational institutions. Amongst them the Indian Institute of Ahmedabad which holds the first rank amongst all the management institutes all over India. Apart from that there are other famous institutes such as the National Institute of Design, the Mudra Institute of Communications and the National Institute of Fashion Technology.
