Introduction The disaster stricken city of Bhopal is a city that is situated in the central India. It is the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. Bhopal was once upon a time also the name of a Muslim Princely state in the Central India. Situated in just north of the upper limit of the Vindhya mountain ranges, Bhopal, India is more likely a hilly region but still it is hot in nature. It is a city that is well connected to the rest of the country through rail, roads and airways. The main rail that connects this city is the north south central axis that runs from New Delhi. The main train that connects this city is the Malwa express. With a decent amount of population of almost all the religions the Old city of Bhopal; India is a dominated by Muslims. History This is also a city of rich cultural heritage. Bhopal, India is said to have been founded by the Parmara King Bhoj. Earlier the city was known as Bhojpal as it was named after the King Bhoj and the dam "Pal" that was constructed by the king himself so as to form the lakes surrounding Bhopal. This was the ancient history of Bhopal. However, after independence it was the last princely state to have signed the "Instrument of Accession". After the independence Sindhi refugees from Pakistan were accommodated in Bairagah. Afterwards in 1956 Bhopal was integrated into the state of Madhya Pradesh and Bhopal was made its capital. Bhopal Catastrophe In the year of 1984 the month of December brought a nightmare that could never be seen again. On December 3rd Bhopal was struck by the biggest gas tragedy that was ever caused in the sub-continent of India. On this day a Union Carbide Plant in Bhopal leaked 40 tons of toxic Methyl Isocyanate gas. In this nightmarish tragedy 3000 people were killed outright and the number that were injured were somewhere in between 150000 to 600000. However, officially the number of death that was registered was 12000. Places of Interest Apart from the dark side of the history of the city it also carries a rich cultural heritage in its lap. However, mostly the monuments and the heritage of Bhopal, India is given by the Muslim Rulers that had ruled this city in the past. Amongst the place of interest some are the Taj-ul-Masaajid, Kheoni Sanctuary, Islam Nagar, Purana Kila, Jama Masjid, Van Vihar national Park etc. Though this city has a black spot in its name still it is a very beautiful and planned city.
