Introduction Situated in the northwest of the state of Rajasthan in western India, Bikaner was formerly one of the capitals of the princely state of Bikaner. From its small origins it has rapidly turned into one of the largest cities in the state of Rajasthan. It has now become the fourth largest city in Rajasthan. As it is a city situated in the middle of the Thar Desert with very little rainfall so it has an extreme type of climate. In the summers the temperature rises to somewhat 45 degrees and in the winters the temperature drops to the freezing point. Bikaner being the desert city of Rajasthan attracts a huge number of tourists for its picturesque golden sand dunes, striking red sandstone forts, stunning palaces and safaris and undoubtedly the camel safaris. City of Culture and Tradition Rao Bikaji who was a Rathore prince in 1488 AD founded this city. It is said that he transformed the barren land of Jangladesh into a striking city. However later it turned into a princely state. The prime significance of Bikaner was that it was an important trade route that was linked with China and Central Asia. Now Bikaner, India has become one of the most traditionally and culturally strong places in India. It is primarily an agrarian economy. Bikaner is famous for its fire dance where the dancers enthrall their viewers by their tap dance over red-hot burning coal. This city is very rich with regards to music and dance. Itinerant balladeers like the Bhopas, Bhatts, Charans and Bandis have dominated the dancing scenario. They all have their distinctive styles. As Bikaner is situated near the desert so people there fight the desolation of the desert by wearing vibrant and colorful costumes. These costumes are really different from any other costume. Moreover, Bikaner is also famous for its arts and crafts. It is famous for miniature paintings and woodcarving works. There are also some traditional arts such as Doll making, Usta's and Minakari. Bikaneri stone carvers and craftsmen are also famous. Places Of Interest There are many tourist attractions that make Bikaner, India one of the tourist's favorite destinations. Amongst the major tourist attractions some are Junagarh Fort, Lalgarh Palace, Laxminath Temple, various Havelis and Rajasthan State Archives. Apart from these attractions there are also some attractions that make the city a strategic point for the tourists.
