Introduction

Jaisalmer is a town, which covers a major part of the desert region of Rajasthan. It is famous all over India as The Golden City. Situated in the heart of the Thar Desert it carries abounds in its heart ancient palaces, temples and quaint settlements. It is known as The Golden City because while the sun sets the sandstone buildings emit a lustrous glow, which is of golden color. As it is remotely situated so it is still untouched by outside influences. Jaisalmer, India is situated in an elevation of about 229 meters above sea level. It is an indeterminable sea of sand hills of every shape and sizes. Even the sand hills are extremely attractive as some of them have also the height of 150 feet. The climate over here is dry and healthy. But the biggest problem is that water is extremely scarce here as there are no perennial streams.

The Fairytale Fortress City

Rawal Jaisal after whom the city is named founded this city. In the 12th century Prince Jaisal as a staging post for camel trains founded this city. Literally Jaisalmer means - the Hill Fort of Jaisal - . Yadav Bhatti Rajputs dominate the inhabitance of this city of Jaisalmer, India. There are many tourist attractions in this city. They are: -

- Golden Fort - The major attraction in Jaisalmer, India is the Golden Fort. It is perched 80 meter high on a hill. It has an enchanting cobweb of narrow lanes dotted with some lovely havelis and three beautifully sculptured Jain Titles. There are even five interconnected palaces. There are four different gateways to enter into this fort. They are Akhaiya Pol, Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol and Hava Pol.
- Sam Sand Dunes - The picturesque sand dunes of Jaisalmer, India is an explicit feature of Jaisalmer. Nobody else can ever hold the credit of the enchanting mirage that is created by the ripples on the wind-caressed dunes.
- Gadsisar Lake - This was the lake, which was the main source of drinking water in the olden times. There is an arched gateway, which leads to a small tank flanked by shrines and well laid out gardens. It gives a spectacular sight and is also the best place for outings.

Apart from these beautiful places there are also some places, which are a major attraction for the people who come to Jaisalmer such as the Akal Wood Fossil Park, Desert National Park. Another major attractions are the various forts and havelis in the beautiful city of Jaisalmer.
