Sawai Gandharva Music Festival in Pune was celebrated in honor of Sawai Gandharva. In the year 1952 the first musical concert was participated by Pandit Feroz Dastur, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Smt Gangubai Hangal. In the year 1953, to commemorate the first death anniversary of Sawai Gandharva music festival was organized by Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal. This musical music festival achieved grand success. So, it was decided to arrange the music festival each year. Thus, the Sawai Gandharva Music Festival in Pune came into existence.
In the beginning years of the popular music festival used to one-day mega event. During this time only singers from the celebrated Kirana gharana used to perform. But nowadays singers from other gharanas, instrumentalists and dancers also perform in this grand event. Nowadays the music event lasts for three days. The Sawai Gandharva Music Festival in Pune has moved to many venues of Pune from Laxmi Kreeda Mandir where it was inaugurated. Some of the other locations where the festival was held include Motibaug, Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya and Renuka Swaroop Memorial Girls' High School. Although the venues for the festival have changed from time to time yet the arrangements for the pandal are always made by the well-known M/s Gokhale Mandap Contractors.
