Konark

Konark is one of the most important tourist destinations of India. This historic place is filled with a large number of monuments and other structures that are fantastic examples of the art, architecture and culture of India.

Konark is located very close to Puri. It is situated at a distance of 31 kilometers from the coastal city. Ramachandi, another beach town and a popular tourist spot, is just 5 kilometers away from Konark. One can get to Konark by taking a train to Puri or to Bhubaneshwar and then driving the road from there.

Konark is known for the world-famous Konark Temple or the Sun Temple. The Konark Temple is one of the finest and the only existing examples of ancient Orissan architecture. This fabulous temple was built of stone during the 13th century. The temple is designed in the form of a chariot, which is drawn by seven horses. The temple has a total of 24 ornately carved wheels, which signify the time divisions. The walls of the temple bear intricate carvings, which depict the court life of the kings, hunting scenes and heavenly beings. The figures are extremely graceful and symbolize the splendor of Indian art and architecture. You can check out the Natya Mandir or dancing hall of this temple and marvel at its opulence and beauty. Another temple that is worth checking out is the Vaishnadevi Mayadevi Temple.

Once here, you must not forget to check out the Konark Beach. Here you can enjoy the view of the rising and the setting sun. The view is simply wonderful and is something that one should not miss at all. If you happen to come here, you can also check out the Ramachandi Temple, located nearly 5-10 kilometers from this place.

Konark occupies an area of 2.5 kilometers. Tourists can come here at any time of the year. However, the period ranging from October to March is considered as the bets time to visit this place.

Excursions near by Puri is incomplete without paying a visit to Konark. This marvelous place with its architectural marvel and beautiful beach is a real treat for the tourists.
