Puri is the land of festivals and events. There are some exciting events, which
take place throughout the year. Chandan Yatra Festival in Puri is a journey in
Narendra Pond. Mahalakshmi and Bhudevi are escorted by substitutes of Sri Jagannath,
Rama Krishna, lakshmi, Saraswati and five Shivas, in special palanquins move to
the Narendra Pond for a sacramental evening sail every day for 21 days. At the
Chandan Mandap within the pool the idols are occupied themselves in water sport
in the specifically set vats of sandal paste water. In the valedictory night,
the gods cruise for 21 times. The Chandan Jatra is or else known as Gandhalepana
Jatra.
Ratha Yatra Festival in Puri takes place on the asadha shukla dwitiya following
first round rituals the three gods and Sudarshna are accompanied into their
specifically built enormous festooned chariot parked near Singhadwar in a traditional
pahandi parade. Lakhs of followers irrespective of class, dogma, and nationality
crowd on the Grand Road to welcome their Lord of lords. The Thakur Raja of Puri
carries out the formal Chhera panhara on the three chariots and subsequent to
that, the chariots are drawed amidst thunderous cheers and playing of various
musical instruments.
Birthday of Sri Jagannath (Snan Yatra) festival in Puri is an extraordinary
bath of Jagannath takes place on the Purnima of Jyestha month to commemorate
the form day of Lord Jagannath. According to Skanda Purana when Raja Indradyumna
set up the wooden gods, he prearranged this bathing festival. This day is believed
to be the birthday of Lord Jagannath and is held in the full-moon day of the
month of Jyestha. This festival is also held in all other important Puri at
the same time and attracts thousands of visitors and pilgrims from all over
the country.
