Situated on The Mall in Shimla in India, the Gaiety Theatre opened on the 30th May, 1887. The year was notable for the Jubilee Year of Queen Victoria. Renowned film personalities like K.L. Saigal, Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Jennifer Kendall, Raj Babbar, Anupam Kher, Manohar Singh, Nasseerudin Shah, regularly performed on the stage of this famous theatre. Some of the best plays of London were staged here. At present, this Gaiety Theatre is recognized as social club. Various colleges and schools organize their stage shows here.
The neo- Gothic structure of the Gaiety Theatre is built in the style of the prize winning design of Bijou theatre and it is also notable for its quality sound system. The architect, Henry Irwin, designed the building.
Some of the leading theatre personalities like Field Marshal Lord Roberts, Commander-in-Chief of India; Major P.H. Dnyer, Lord Bill Beresford, famous poet and author Rudyard Kipling, Lord Kitchner, Mrs. Deane, Major General Sir Godfrey Williams, Colonel Baden Powell, Sir Dennis Fitz Patrick were associated with the Shimla Amateur Dramatic Club.
