Himachal Pradesh has beautiful natural sceneries and architectures. One the best well known is its hill station of Shimla. Shimla has been the summer capital of the British Raj and was called as the 'Queen of the Hill Stations'. Location of Shimla is at an altitude of 2159 metres and therefore it is always cool during the summers. Shimla covers an area of 18 sq. km on a crescent shaped ridge. It includes many hills like the Jakhu, Prospect Hill, Observatory Hill, Elysium Hill and Summer Hill. The city is surrounded by forests of pine, deodar, oak and rhododendron. It is well connected by rail, road and air. Shimla is connected to Kalka by train which takes 6 hours. There is also an overnight train from Delhi which reaches Kalka early morning. From here you can catch the connecting narrow gauge train from here to Shimla. The journey is spectacular as it passes through beautiful landscapes and 103 tunnels! By road it is well connected through National Highway NH-22. There are frequent bus services from Chandigarh by ordinary operators as well as by state ones. By air Shimla is connected through Shimla airport at Jubbarhatti which is 23 kms from the city. Close to the Location of Shimla is the place of Kufri at a height of 8600 feet. It is the winter sports capital as you can ski your hearts content. It is also a very picturesque spot for picnics with hills and snowy peaks. Visit the town of Chail with its forests filled with deer and birds. Also get a glimpse of the town and the snow covered Himalayas from Jakhu Hill. From the Location of Shimla it is 2 kms and has a temple of Hanuman on the top of the hill. For purchasing some authentic handicrafts you can check the stores at Lakkar Bazar. Items like woolen and pashmina shawls, handmade shoes, dolls, wooden items etc are all available here.
